The college will celebrate its first Family Day event Saturday, May 21 in the main campus cafeteria at 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
This event will give children of the community an opportunity to come and visit Lane and understand what it is that the college can do for them.
Lane Family Day is also meant for students, faculty and staff to have an opportunity to get together and meet in a way that they normally don’t have time for.
“Lane Family Day is geared towards children to let them know what Lane has for them now and in the future,” said Michael O’Neal, the college’s food and beverage manager. “But also, it will definitely give students a way to connect outside of class.”
This free event will begin with a pancake breakfast sponsored by McDonald’s Wholesale. Otherwise, most of the event will be ongoing so children can explore the different careers that will be present.
Each child will receive a blank “diploma” upon entering the event. Children will receive stamps from five different “real life superheroes.”
The “real life superheroes” will include EMTs, chefs, pilots, nurses, public safety officers, a scientist from the science department, a nutritionist, and firefighters.
After five stamps are collected the diploma is complete. The children will then take the diploma in return for either a tee shirt or a book as a gift for completing it.
“Lane Family Day is a chance to increase a sense of community in a child and family environment,” said Tiana Marrone-Creech, the LCC Foundation’s annual gift officer.
Second-year student and first time “superhero” Anya Mackovjak will be representing Lane’s nursing school.
“I want to inspire interest to the younger generation not just about nursing, but also about health care in general,” she said. “I want to let the youth know about why health care is important and things to do to prevent a certain disease,”
Children of all ages will have the opportunity to experience an aviation flight simulator from a pilot that will be there. This way they will get to see what the LCC flight program has to offer.
“It will be up to the children to explore the activities there and the things that they’re interested in,” said O’Neal.
Also, Lane Family Day will be accepting donations to create a scholarship for LCC students with dependent children.
ASLCC and the LCC Foundation have both made financial donations for materials for the event and the college’s Printing and Graphics department printed all of the posters and flyers for this event.
Zany Zoo, another sponsor for this event, has donated a mix of animals from rabbits to exotic birds for the petting zoo.
“We are very excited to start this event and to bring it the Lane community and help people come out and experience it,” said O’Neal. “I’m sure they’ll have a great time.”
